Summary

A not-quite epic science fiction adventure about a down-on-his luck galactic pilot caught in a cross-galaxy struggle for survival! Space travel just isn't what it used to be。 With the invention of Quantum Teleportation, space heroes aren't needed anymore。 When one particularly unlucky ex-adventurer masquerades as famous pilot and hate figure Jacques McKeown, he's sucked into an ever-deepening corporate and political intrigue。 Between space pirates, adorable deadly creatures, and a missing fortune in royalties, saving the universe was never this difficult!

From the creator of Mogworld and Jam

Benjamin Richard "Yahtzee" Croshaw is a British-Australian comedic writer, video game journalist, author, and video game developer。 He is perhaps best known for his acerbic video game review series, Zero Punctuation, for The Escapist

Croshaw's performance as the narrator of the audiobook is what makes this book to 4 stars。 The plot is a bit weak, Croshaw uses metaphors and similes far too often and the science fiction stuff isn't that interesting。 But the dialogue is very witty and the jokes are quite funny。 And Croshaw's narration is brilliant, his funny voices and inflections really enhance the book。 Solid book, definitely worth a credit on Audible。 Croshaw's performance as the narrator of the audiobook is what makes this book to 4 stars。 The plot is a bit weak, Croshaw uses metaphors and similes far too often and the science fiction stuff isn't that interesting。 But the dialogue is very witty and the jokes are quite funny。 And Croshaw's narration is brilliant, his funny voices and inflections really enhance the book。 Solid book, definitely worth a credit on Audible。 。。。more

Audiobook version。 Took a while to finish because our road trip wasn't quite long enough so we waited for a couple more semi-long trips to finish it off。 Which goes to show that it wasn't the most gripping book - if it had been we'd have listened to it in the living room。 But it was still entertaining and humorous。 The audiobook version is well done and I enjoyed listening to it even if I didn't HAVE to know what happened next (which is good because I felt it didn't really tie everything up at t Audiobook version。 Took a while to finish because our road trip wasn't quite long enough so we waited for a couple more semi-long trips to finish it off。 Which goes to show that it wasn't the most gripping book - if it had been we'd have listened to it in the living room。 But it was still entertaining and humorous。 The audiobook version is well done and I enjoyed listening to it even if I didn't HAVE to know what happened next (which is good because I felt it didn't really tie everything up at the end but I'm not intrigued enough to go looking for those answers)。 。。。more

After watching the occasional episode of Yahtzee Crohshaw's online video game reviews, Zero Punctuation, I was curious if he would use punctuation in his books。 Happily, he does。 Additionally, since Yahtzee doesn't have fit all of his thoughts and humor into a five minute video, the jokes are spaced out and interwoven appropriately throughout this novel。Will Save the Galaxy for Food sets up an interesting premise in a futuristic science fiction universe。 What happens to the Star Pilots when thei After watching the occasional episode of Yahtzee Crohshaw's online video game reviews, Zero Punctuation, I was curious if he would use punctuation in his books。 Happily, he does。 Additionally, since Yahtzee doesn't have fit all of his thoughts and humor into a five minute video, the jokes are spaced out and interwoven appropriately throughout this novel。Will Save the Galaxy for Food sets up an interesting premise in a futuristic science fiction universe。 What happens to the Star Pilots when their jobs become obsolete with the invention of Quantum Teleportation? The plot follows the antics of one of these washed-up pilots as they inadvertently get caught up in a world of political intrigue。 While there is plenty of interesting cultural and technological aspects of this imagined future universe, the story sticks the main concept of what happens to Star Pilots when they are made redundant。I was pleasantly surprised by this story and have added the rest of Yahtzee's books on Audible to my wish list。 Part of me felt a moment of nostalgia from high school as if I was reading a Ben Elton book from the 90s。 。。。more

This book is very well structured and has great pacing。 At no point I felt short-changed as it delivers exactly what it sets itself to: a fun-packed, comedic space adventure。 Most of the characters are one-note but not entirely forgettable and it pleasantly explores our aversion to change or at least the perhaps unfair pedestal we put our glory days on。It's a couple of inches deeper than a Marvel movie, both in terms of what and how it explores but also the lavishness of ideas it evokes。 And tha This book is very well structured and has great pacing。 At no point I felt short-changed as it delivers exactly what it sets itself to: a fun-packed, comedic space adventure。 Most of the characters are one-note but not entirely forgettable and it pleasantly explores our aversion to change or at least the perhaps unfair pedestal we put our glory days on。It's a couple of inches deeper than a Marvel movie, both in terms of what and how it explores but also the lavishness of ideas it evokes。 And that's ok! It's it needs to be。 It won't make you a philosopher but it will make you think and it will entertain you。 The final chapters are very gripping and the ending unexpected。 It's not Hitchhiker's Guide level of funny but it makes up for it having it's unique voice, however if you followed the author's YouTube projects kind of makes it hard to imagine anything but a white stick figure delivering the quips at 1。5x normal rate as opposed to the original protagonist the author created。 。。。more

Yahtzee’s best book by far。 More interesting setting and focused narrative than any of his other book。 Doesn’t suffer from the same middle bloated episodic sketches feel that mogworld and jam have。

"Will Save the Galaxy for Food" is a comedic science fiction novel that is sadly short on both comedy and science fiction。 The zany, over-the-top plot offers a few chuckles, but no laugh-out-loud moments。 I would never demand that a book like this provide realistic depictions of space travel and space combat。 But it would be nice not to have jarring inaccuracies, like the idea that fancy spaceships with lots of fins and decorations are slower because they have more air resistance _in space_。 Or "Will Save the Galaxy for Food" is a comedic science fiction novel that is sadly short on both comedy and science fiction。 The zany, over-the-top plot offers a few chuckles, but no laugh-out-loud moments。 I would never demand that a book like this provide realistic depictions of space travel and space combat。 But it would be nice not to have jarring inaccuracies, like the idea that fancy spaceships with lots of fins and decorations are slower because they have more air resistance _in space_。 Or that a mafia thug can jump from spaceship to spaceship _in space_ in order to attack the crews。Violence: RLanguage: RSexuality: PG 。。。more

While not as funny as some of his other works, there is a lot of humor to be found here, as well as some insightful examination of what happens when an entire industry is replaced by technological innovation。 The space pilots are redundant now, but still a large population。 Inserted into this is a despised author, a terrifying mafia head moving in on a new planet, his petulant son and the girl he wants to impress, and a harried executive assistant who brings it all together in an explosive manne While not as funny as some of his other works, there is a lot of humor to be found here, as well as some insightful examination of what happens when an entire industry is replaced by technological innovation。 The space pilots are redundant now, but still a large population。 Inserted into this is a despised author, a terrifying mafia head moving in on a new planet, his petulant son and the girl he wants to impress, and a harried executive assistant who brings it all together in an explosive manner。 There's also a terrible space ship, a pirated space station, and formerly cute mascots gone horrible wrong。 Our protagonist stumbles through it all, usually on the receiving end of abuse or troubles, but manages to pull it all together in the end。 It's a fair bit of fun, with a good number of action-packed scenes, and a little food for thought。 I'll be looking into the sequel。 。。。more

Cracking old fashioned adventure set in the future。An out of work down on his luck space pilot (Standard Mal Reynolds, Han Solo stock character) yearns to go back to the 'golden age ' of space travel, when pilots were heroes saving worlds。 What follows is a rollercoaster adventure with a satisfying ending。 The characters are really well realised and the subject matter is fun and accessible。 As a negative I didn't find it all that funny。 But it kept me hooked till the end。 Recommend。 Cracking old fashioned adventure set in the future。An out of work down on his luck space pilot (Standard Mal Reynolds, Han Solo stock character) yearns to go back to the 'golden age ' of space travel, when pilots were heroes saving worlds。 What follows is a rollercoaster adventure with a satisfying ending。 The characters are really well realised and the subject matter is fun and accessible。 As a negative I didn't find it all that funny。 But it kept me hooked till the end。 Recommend。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I enjoyed it。 But the main characters and the plot continuation were very similar to Mogworld。 Which conclusion was a lot stronger。 But I see myself reading the follow up。

Four stars purely because I laughed so hard at moments that I became a hazard to myself。

I really enjoyed this。 It's always hard with comedic books。 Because it's hard to find the balance。 But this was just the right side of crazy。 A main character down on his luck, his profession made obsolete by new technology, are recruited to pretend to be a famous author no one has ever seen in order to please a spoiled rich brat for his birthday。The only problem? All of his profession hates the authors guts for stealing their lives and profiting on them。 And all of them would have no problem se I really enjoyed this。 It's always hard with comedic books。 Because it's hard to find the balance。 But this was just the right side of crazy。 A main character down on his luck, his profession made obsolete by new technology, are recruited to pretend to be a famous author no one has ever seen in order to please a spoiled rich brat for his birthday。The only problem? Made it 10% off the way through, but it just didn’t grab me。 Also, I thought I was picking up on some homophobia and fat-hate, so I looked at some of the other reviews。 Yep。 There’s more of that。 And then some。 So, it’s a no from me。

Sci-fi worth readingWill Save the Galaxy for Food is a surprisingly well written, enjoyable read。 Only in one chapter does it lag, but not seriously。 Funny, intelligent and compelling, it is entirely worth the time and money required to experience it。

My 2nd Yahtzee Croshaw book, I liked it but it was missing something。 Read by Yahtzee certainly brings it more to life。

I actually felt this was one of the worst books I have subjected myself too。 Maybe I expected satire to be funny。 I don't know。 Honestly I am not sure why I wasted my time on this。 What little attempt at humour there was fell flat。The replacements for swearing distracted from the book far too much。 It felt like the author put far more effort in to finding a way to calling someone a div (not an insult I have heard since primary school) and building a system of swearing around that, then he did on I actually felt this was one of the worst books I have subjected myself too。 Maybe I expected satire to be funny。 I don't know。 Honestly I am not sure why I wasted my time on this。 What little attempt at humour there was fell flat。The replacements for swearing distracted from the book far too much。 It felt like the author put far more effort in to finding a way to calling someone a div (not an insult I have heard since primary school) and building a system of swearing around that, then he did on any other joke or idea in the bookYes, this was satire so I expected to have mockery of stereotypes。 I expected that to be perhaps be stereotypes and tropes found in space opera as a whole。 Not generally sticking with stereotypes your uncle who is stuck in the 60s would hold。Formulaic, boring, and really not funny。 。。。more

A fun witty sci-fi comedy。 The author has no grasp of how orbital dynamics work which leads to some tough to swallow science at times。 Big technological leaps like constructing wormholes are fine in this type of genre, but when using advanced versions of current tech you need to ground it in reality。All that being said, I know I'm being picky and it didn't stop me from enjoying the characters and story。 A fun witty sci-fi comedy。 The author has no grasp of how orbital dynamics work which leads to some tough to swallow science at times。 Big technological leaps like constructing wormholes are fine in this type of genre, but when using advanced versions of current tech you need to ground it in reality。All that being said, I know I'm being picky and it didn't stop me from enjoying the characters and story。 。。。more

The Douglas Adams influences are worn on the author's sleeves here。 The characters are a bit clichéd but it's a funny read and the story has an open yet satisfying conclusion。 Lampshades a lot of science fiction tropes。 I highly recommend the audiobook version as Yahtzee's delivery as narrator punctuates the jokes perfectly。 The Douglas Adams influences are worn on the author's sleeves here。 The characters are a bit clichéd but it's a funny read and the story has an open yet satisfying conclusion。 Lampshades a lot of science fiction tropes。 I highly recommend the audiobook version as Yahtzee's delivery as narrator punctuates the jokes perfectly。 。。。more

Enjoyable adventure type of book with a few twists and turns to keep it interesting right up to the end。 An easy read but with a very well crafted sci-fi world nonetheless。 The world laid out doesn't feel skimped on or glossed over in anyway but at the same time it doesn't get too complicated explaining all minutiae which can make sci-fi books a slog to get through。 Very much looking forward to the second one in this series。 Enjoyable adventure type of book with a few twists and turns to keep it interesting right up to the end。 An easy read but with a very well crafted sci-fi world nonetheless。 The world laid out doesn't feel skimped on or glossed over in anyway but at the same time it doesn't get too complicated explaining all minutiae which can make sci-fi books a slog to get through。 Very much looking forward to the second one in this series。 。。。more
